Every song begins somewhere: a line, a feeling, a melody or a story that stays with you. Two songs from Mickey Wynne’s album MICK II – Universal Traveller show how different that first idea can be.
A guitar part from a dream
“Stroll On” started while Mickey was asleep. “I dreamt the guitar part and luckily I remembered it when I woke up,” he told Crucial Rhythm. “Then it took me a day to tune and retune my guitar until I could play the part in the key of C.”
The title came next, along with some words about a break-up. “By that time, the song was writing itself,” he said.
A song from a jam
“Not For Sale” began in a very different way, with Mickey and Phil Saatchi playing two guitars at a friend’s house in Jersey. “Phil was playing something and this song started emerging, so we worked it through some more,” Mickey recalled.
From first idea to finished song
The 14-Day Songwriter is Mickey’s book on that next stage. It gives a first idea a practical 14-step path toward a finished song. Find out more about the book here on Mick.world or at 14daysongwriter.com.
